In this section, we will briefly highlight some of the quick facts about Windows Services that you should be aware of in order to write the 70-320 exam If Windows Services is a topic of interest to you, spend some time working through the examples in MSDN and experiment creating services of your own For the exam, you ll need to know the following The SystemServiceProcess namespace includes the following classes that are required for a Windows service to operate: ServiceBase This is the parent class of your Windows service This is the class that handles the start and stop requests ServiceProcessInstaller Along with ServiceInstaller, this class is used to install and configure the service programs ServiceController This class implements the service control program and is used to send requests to services See the next section for more information on the ServiceController classThe configuration of your Windows service can be done in the local Registry Access the Registry by typing regedt32exe at the Run prompt (select Start | Run) This will open the Windows Registry (we are using Windows 2000 Professional check the documentation for other versions of the Windows NT kernel) Locate the service in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services, and make any necessary changes (see the following illustration) You can modify such properties as the type of service, the display name, startup PART V

he electromagnetic lock was introduced in the United States in 1970 and has gained considerable popularity Today, it s a popular part of access control systems throughout the world Electromagnetic locks are often used to secure emergency exit doors When connected to a fire alarm system, the lock s power source is automatically disconnected when the fire alarm is activated This allows the door to open freely, so people can exit quickly Although the principle of operation of an electromagnetic lock is different from that of a conventional mechanical lock, the former has proven a cost-effective, high-security locking device Unlike a mechanical lock, an electromagnetic lock doesn t rely on the release of a bolt or a latch for security Instead, it relies on electricity and magnetism

You can also work with Windows services by using a command-line tool called scexe This tool can be found in the \Microsoft Platform SDK\Bin\WinNT folder (if installed) for Windows NT or 2000 or in the Windows\system32 folder on Windows XP The scexe command is installed automatically for Windows XP, but it must be installed manually for earlier versions Using this command, you can check the status of a service, work with the configuration, or install or remove the service Figure 26-8 shows the syntax of the command Finally, an instance of the ServiceController class can be added to your service project in Visual Studio NET, and it can be used to control the service Figure 26-9 shows the class added to the project
